Judith Kashti-Kroch wurde 1924 als drittes von insgesamt vier Kindern der Eheleute Fritz Jehoschua Kroch und Leonore Kroch geboren. Fritz Kroch hatte das väterliche Geschäft übernommen und war u.a. Direktor der Kühltransit A.G. 1920 hatte er Leonore Amalie Frank, die Tochter des Kantors Rafael Frank, geheiratet.
Die wohlhabende Familie wohnte zunächst bei Johanna Frank, der Mutter von Leonore Kroch und Witwe des Kantors Rafael Frank, 1924 zog sie in die Beethovenstraße 8, später wohnten die Krochs in der Mozartstraße 23. Die Familie besuchte an Sabbat die Synagoge, meist war es die Privatsynagoge im Haus des Onkels Hans Kroch in der Sebastian-Bach-Straße, die Kinder gingen in die Carlebach-Schule, man reiste viel in Europa, besonders in die Schweiz.
Nach 1933 hielt sich die Familie länger in der Schweiz und in Paris auf, nach der Rückkehr bewohnte sie eine Wohnung in der Mozartstraße 17.
Der Vater Fritz J. Kroch und der älter Bruder Peter Kroch sind zur Zeit des Novemberpogroms in Frankreich, die Mutter Leonore Kroch muss sich infolge der Ereignisse einer längeren Behandlung im jüdischen Krankenhaus unterziehen und die Kinder werden daraufhin auf eine abenteuerliche Reise nach Belgien geschickt, bei der sie illegal die Grenze überqueren müssen. Anfang 1939 gelingt auch der Mutter die Flucht – sie gelangt über die Schweiz nach Frankreich.

Judith Kasthi-Kroch was born in 1924 as the third of four children of the married couple Fritz Jehoschua Kroch and Leonore Kroch. Fritz Kroch had taken over his father's business and was, among other things, director of Kühltransit A.G. In 1920 he had married Leonore Amalie Frank, the daughter of the cantor Rafael Frank.
The wealthy family at first lived with Johanna Frank, the mother of Leonore Kroch and widow of the cantor Rafael Frank. In 1924 she moved to Beethovenstraße 8; later the Krochs lived on Mozartstraße 23. The family went to the synagogue on Sabbath day, mostly the private synagogue in the house of the uncle Hans Kroch on Sebastian-Bach-Straße. The children went to the Carlebach School. The family travelled a lot in Europe, especially to Switzerland.
After 1933, the family stayed in Switzerland and in Paris for a longer period of time, and after their return they lived in an apartment on Mozartstraße 17.
The father, Fritz J. Kroch, and the older brother, Peter Kroch, are in France at the time of the November pogrom, the mother Leonore Kroch has to undergo longer treatment in the Jewish hospital as a result of the events, and the children are then sent on an adventurous journey to Belgium, where they have to cross the border illegally. At the beginning of 1939, the mother also manages to escape – she arrives in France via Switzerland.
