Von 1914 bis 1918 ist Elias Broder im Militärdienst, er gehört dem 1. Pionierbataillon Olmütz an. Im Jahr nach Kriegsende tritt er offiziell in das Unternehmen des Vaters ein – die Firma M. Broder & Söhne wird gegründet.
Im Februar 1920 heiratet der 27-Jährige Rosa, eine 1893 in Wien geborene Exelbirt. Die Trauung durch Rabbiner Ephraim Carlebach wurde am 7.4.1920 vollzogen. Frisch vermählt, ist Elias Broder der Erste, der das elterliche Haus in der Gießerstraße 70 verlässt. Zunächst wohnt das junge Paar in der Hirzelstraße 2.
Rosa und Elias Broder leben später in der Luppenstraße 28 in Lindenau. Elias Broder, er ist damals knapp vierzig, und sein Bruder Josef Broder sind seit dem Tod des Vaters im Frühjahr 1930 Geschäftsführer der Firma und M. Broder & Söhne gehört zu einem der führenden Unternehmen der Branche.
In einem Antrag Elias Broders auf „Paßausstellung oder Sichtvermerk“ vom 3.8.1937 gibt er den Reisezweck für mehrere Reisen mit „geschäftlichen Angelegenheiten“ an und tatsächlich pendelt er gegen Ende der 30er Jahre oft zwischen Leipzig und London. Die Broders bereiten ihre Auswanderung aktiv vor, indem sie internationale Kontakte suchen und ausbauen.
Die Realität in Deutschland holt die Familie an einem Schreckenstag zwischen dem 15. und 17.11.1938 ein. Im Rahmen einer Sonderaktion wird Elias Broder zusammen mit 533 anderen Personen verhaftet. Während er selbst rasch wieder auf freien Fuß kommt, wird sein ebenfalls verhafteter Bruder Jakob nach Sachsenhausen gebracht. Elias Broder macht sich kurz darauf in seiner Offiziersuniform und hochdekoriert mit seinen Medaillen aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg auf den Weg in das Konzentrationslager. Sein Auftreten dort muss so bestimmt gewesen sein, dass der Bruder wenig später freikommt. Noch heute feiert die Familie dieses Ereignis, an jedem 12. Dezember.
Zu diesem Zeitpunkt haben die Prozesse um die so genannte „Arisierung“ der Firma der Broders schon begonnen und auch Elias Broder, der Leipzig nie verlassen wollte, muss schließlich emigrieren. Mit seiner Ehefrau Rosa Broder verlässt er Deutschland am 27.4.1939.

From 1914 to 1918 Elias Broder is in the service of the military and belongs to the 1st Pioneer-Bataillon Olmütz. In the year following the end of the war he officially joins his father’s company — the firm M. Broder & Söhne is founded.
In February 1920 the 27-year-old Elias Broder marries Rosa Exelbirt, born in Vienna in 1893. The church wedding follows on the April 7, 1920 and is executed by Rabbi Ephraim Carlebach.37 Newly married, Elias Broder is the first to leave the family home on Gießerstraße 70. Initially the young couple lives on Hirzelstraße 2.
Rosa and Elias Broder later live on Luppenstraße 28 in Lindenau. After their father dies in the spring of 1930, Elias Broder, who is almost fourty at the time, and his brother Josef Broder are now the general managers of the firm and M. Broder & Söhne belongs to one of the leading companies in the business. In an application of Elias Broder on “Pass Issuing or Visa” from August 3, 1937, he gives the reason for travelling on many of the trips as “business opportunities” and he actually commutes between Leipzig and London often around the end of the 30s. The Broders are actively preparing their emigration by seeking and expanding international contacts.
The family gets a hint of the reality in Germany on a terrifying day between the 15th and the 17th November 1938. As part of a special campaign, Elias Broder is arrested along with 533 other people.45 While he himself is set free quickly, his brother Jakob, who has also been arrested, is brought to Sachsenhausen. Shortly after, Elias Broder puts on his officer’s uniform, which is highly decorated with medals from the First World War and goes to the concentration camp. His appearance there must have been so impressive that his brother is freed a short time later. Today, the family still celebrates this event, on every 12th of December. At this point in time, the process of the so-called “Aryanization” of Broders’ firm has already begun and even Elias Broder, who never wanted to leave Leipzig, must finally emigrate. Elias and his wife Rosa Broder leave Germany on April 27, 1939.
